Yurt Living

2010 January 11

Travelers/hikers/adventurers Bretwood Higman, Erin McKittrick and baby Katmai live in a Mongolian Yurt in remote Alaska choosing a rustic life without running water, toilet or shower to save for long holidays trekking.

Higman grew up in Seldovia, where they currently live in their 452 square foot yurt.  College sweetheart McKittrick is from Seattle and says “I’m someone who doesn’t mind giving up some level of convenience for having an interesting experience.”  They don’t have a toilet but they would not live without broadband internet access.  Read New York Times article.

Hi Thanks for reposting this really exciting article about a couple living an exciting and adventurous life. I only wish that the nytimes had pointed out that the trek to an outhouse is not the only option for yurt bathrooms. Many folks also have composting toilets, which are clean, odorless, and energy efficient. Here is a list of things that anyone wanting to live in a yurt should think about: http://coloradoyurt.com/yurts/yurt_design_center/before_you_begin/index.php
