Design Flops from The Dwell Show

2010 June 28

If bad things happen in threes, there was at least a double dose of threes at Dwell on Design.  There were pieces that made little sense, including a fireplace with crystals for added bling, odd paper lanterns, far out repurposed furniture that is sure to be an original in at least one home if folks are feeling experimental.

Without further ado, I will allow the pictures to speak for themselves with light commentary due to the confusing nature of some of the “design” we witnessed.

These clunky light fixtures appeared as if someone got out the whiskey and decided to do some glass blowing.  Heavy and seemingly without skill, these lights did not shine.

Who said waterfalls and fireplaces don’t mix?  I do.  This is a feng shui nightmare that every home should do without.  Promoting this blazing fireplace at the beginning of the summer isn’t inspiring and it just reminds me of the first time I heard Britney Spears and thought it must be a joke.  If you have a fear of real water and fire, they have a video imposed version that is so lifelike you’ll want this firefall for yourself.

The Spider Collection from BRC is not one to miss in person.  This is texture to the extreme.  I never would’ve imagined recycling thousands of zippers into a couch could be so comfortable – kind of.  The reuse of zippers made in China is greatness but the element of function is trying in this instance.  Soft and not as rough as you might think when you sit upon it yet cold and industrial feeling sort of like sleeping on denim.  There’s just something not quite right about it.
