John Lautner Exhibit Opening in Palm Springs, February 2010

2010 February 15

Curated by historian Nicholas Olsberg and architect Frank Escher, Between Earth and Heaven will feature an exhibition design that is as visceral an experience as Lautner’s buildings themselves. Newly crafted large-scale models will give a sense of the internal spaces and scale of key projects and digital animations will reveal Lautner’s construction processes. Short color films by prize-winning documentarian Murray Grigor will convey the sensation of movement through these buildings and their sites, helping the visitor to feel the “vitality within repose” that Lautner sought to create.

Surrounding this dramatic core will be a wealth of archival materials, including never-before-seen drawings, architectural renderings, study models and construction photographs which will offer visitors insight into how the structures and spaces unfolded in Lautner’s mind and emerged physically in their settings. This exhibit will be at the Palm Springs Art Museum, February 20 through May 23, 2010.

I saw this John Launtner exhibit, “Between Earth and Heaven”, when it was in Westwod, CA. I loved it. It was the most incredible architectural and artistic show I have ever seen on any architect and his works, and I have seen exhibits on Renzo Piano, Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Rogers, and Richard Meiers just to name a few. The Lautner exhibit had huge projections of his interiors and exteriors of the homes with the large scale models and blue prints to study. What made it just a little more special was the music that went with the exhibit. Who ever put this exhibit together was an amazing artist in there own right.
