Hotel Lautner in Desert Hot Springs, California, was designed by John Lautner and built in 1947 as the Desert Hot Springs Motel. Featured in the pages of April 2012 Interior Design Magazine. The property has been recently renovated by Tracy Beckmann Design and is now open to guests.

I found a couple of vintage photographs of the hotel, circa 1950.

The Desert Hot Springs Motel was built with a series of four interlocking structures.

From his years at Wright’s Taliesin West, Lautner understood the desert, and living on the desert. With this intimate knowledge, he designed the Desert Hot Springs Motel. Each of the 4 units became a walled fortress against the elements: heat, cold, wind, sand and encroaching suburbia. Even as a fortress, light floods in as the unit space flows out to the private walled patios — truly a desert oasis.

The ambiance and the furniture are both lavishing. It’s relaxing to the eyes.
