Glass Houses

2010 January 11

When I first saw this glass house, I immediately thought of Billy Joel’s Glass Houses Album.  I suppose I just dated myself but it was one of my parent’s favorite tapes (yes, cassette) for long road trips to the Grand Canyon, etc.  I know all the lyrics by heart and I have to say there are some really good ditties on that album.

Regardless, this house is a transparent masterpiece by Carlo Santambrogiomilano and Ennio Arosio who work with glass creating furniture, staircases, kitchens and architecture.  If you are lucky enough to live in a remote area with a view or you’re an exhibitionist to the extreme, this structure would be perfect.

Definite intertextual moment. I was reminded of the film Oscar and Lucinda, which is based on Peter Carey’s book.

    Cool. Where´s the bathroom?

  3. January 11, 2010

OMG, that’s soooo gorgeous! It reminded me a little of “The Lake House” – my dream house. ;)

Very cool . . . very modern!! I love it!! … but um… where would I go potty?

Is that the Cullen’s house? I bet those people could make a killing with all the Twilight tourism going on. I would feel so naked in a house like that, even fully clothed!

    Amazing…

  7. January 11, 2010

It looks really great and with a view it would be great for vacations but I would prefer to keep my privacy for everyday life.

This house is cool just for an exhibit. I could not see myself living in anything with that much glass all around. My thoughts “death trap”. It’s just too much glass for me to go to sleep and feel safe.

hmmm, i am picturing myself very chilly in this house. and i would have to buy loads of Windex!

  10. January 11, 2010

Looks chilly. I wouldn’t want to wash the windows in that place….. =P

For the ground floor, this would be fabulous assuming you have a spectacular view. Upstairs though, I want more curtains.

And children in such a house? All I can see are those hundreds of thousands of fingerprints and smashed face prints everywhere.

    Glass+winter=freezing.

Could be very useful in the summer though.

    unless it’s double panel

  15. January 11, 2010

It’s not old idea, I think. But anyone despite Poles would know it. ;) Idea of glass houses is in book of polish writer, Stefan Żeromski. :D The book’s name is “Przedwiośnie” (in English – “The Spring to Come” – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spring_to_Come)

Definately makes me feel chilly and naked just looking at it. Too sharp, not cozy or family minded. I wouldn’t feel safe either. Screams death trap. I have seen some thick glass splinter and shatter with the smallest objects hitting just the right way. It is lovely to look at, not something many would want to live in.

I guess “breaking in” would be exactly that?

When I first saw Johnson’s Glass House in school, the initial thing I thought about was the logistics of the loo…ditto on this one!

  18. January 11, 2010

Looks like a futuristic jail for rich people… who’d be controlled by “Google PrisonWatch” and filmed 24/7 for some online reality show, obviously.

  19. January 11, 2010

I mean go to the bathroom in PEACE! I’d feel afraid people would try to PEEK!

If it’s double glazed then I’m sold.

Bath at night in the dark, and you get rid of that worry.

The only thing is cleaning – you couldn’t get away with anything…

I homeschool, and my son and I have been listening to Billy Joel while we do our school since I read your post. :) He like the glass house, by the way. Thanks.

Whao! I want one of those! Except the bad part is, the house is way too delicate…

  25. January 11, 2010

You’d probably get really burnt. There would be no shade and it would feel like you were under a microscope I would imagine. Plus none of the windows/ walls opened to let the air in/out. Things would get a little steamy in there.

  26. January 11, 2010

Phenomenal design! If it weren’t for the fact that I’m a klutz, I’d live there, even with the bathroom situation. Looks as if it were in a remote place and it’d finally answer my parents question – does she or doesn’t she go in the woods? Lol

  27. January 11, 2010

    This is incledible!
I would love to see it in real life, but I definitely would want to go inside in stocking-feet.
    Amazing work!

  28. January 11, 2010

And I thought I was adventurous for choosing an all glass table for our condo… :) This is very cool. Thanks for sharing!

Where do they keep the band aids ?

  31. January 11, 2010

They have an electric current that runs through the glass that can make it opaque when turned on. At least that is how it was demonstrated at Corning Glass.

  32. January 11, 2010

I’d trip everywhere, I mean, I’m clumsy enough in normal everyday life. Add glass staircases and glass tables to it and I’d have twice as many bruises on me.

I’m not saying it’s not beautiful though =)
    its gorgeous ♥

The quintessential glasshouse is the Philip Johnson House in New Canaan, CT! I could live in it without a problem! :-)

  34. January 11, 2010

No need to worry about fire? Can’t imagine myself changing clothes in that kind of house….

This is an aboslutely GORGEOUS house! The incredible juxtaposition between the natural surroundings and the crisp, almost cold lines of the glass makes it fabulous and interesting and frightening and bleak all at once.
